The Craft with Holland Farkas
Below is a rough automated transcript of the episode. We are working on making this better:
Pat: totally understandable I have an emergency breed on every floor just in case
Bret: another episode of Let's Rewatch the show where we watch movies that we loved in our youth and find out if there's still any good I'm Bret
Ash: breaking in the energy are you guys ready to get spooky
Bret: yes so spooky it's the spookiest time of year
Pat: spooktober
Bret: I don't know if that was going to stick
Ash: spooktober
Pat: we sound like a local Morning News show
Ash: so of course we had to bring in our spookiest friends Holland Farkas hello Halo
welcome back to the show
Holland: thank you I was actually I just listened to the last episode I did like 4 years ago
to be reminded of the structure of the podcast
Ash: I was so bummed
I know I wasn't even on
Holland: and then I realized asked you weren't even on like you weren't even there and then yes like Pat wasn't there
Pat: yeah I miss that one
Ash: yeah I was shooting a documentary in Europe at the time
Ash: had to miss it and I was like damn it the one with Halo
Bret: documentary in Europe
Ash: listen I should we should we should have a whole other podcast episode about how that was the best and the worst experience of my life combined together anyway I'll tell you the story about how he left me in Japan with all the equipment alone but anyway
Pat: sounds like a Wes Anderson movie
Sam: does sound spoopy
Ash: I know I wish it was
Pat: you like traipsing around Tokyo lugging like you don't have proper carrying cases for it and you just got like stands and cameras falling all over you it'll he keep dropping it and then you meet someone really cool and they help you pick up your equipment and then they take you
Ash: I wish that was my experience in Tokyo I wish
Holland: traveling with equipment did you have to travel from the u.s. to Tokyo with the appointment cuz I realize that cuz I found something in Germany last fall and I realized how not fun it is to travel with camera equipment and going through like customs and all that stuff
Ash: yeah I had like
Holland: it's like really stressful
Ash: yeah I had like a 45lb camera backpack that I carried everywhere I was always on my back and then on top of that
Sam: everyday is leg day baby
Ash: and then on top of that I also had tripods and then we shot sniper about this documentary a shot but we we traveled around Europe and shot different places and then we also went to Beijing but the saying about Beijing is you can't bring cameras in there as a professional you can as like a Taurus they will they think that you are lying and they think that you are potentially like journalist trying to you know paint them in a bad light so you
Sam: expose how terrible they are
that sounds so spooky
Ash: yeah so that we had to mail the equipment to Japan which was our last destination and rent all new equipment in China which was not shockingly in Chinese the language of the menu cameras is it was bananas it was a lot of crazy s*** but went on but anyway
Ash: instead we're talking about the spell that we're all under now via the movie The Craft
Holland: MacArthur
Bret: a long walk off a short pier
Ash: but yes we are watching the movie The Craft because there's a new version will not new it's not a remake I believe it's a sequel that's coming out on either the 30th or 31st yet is it oh okay I'm not sure
Holland: I think it's a reboot
Ash: reboot cuz it seemed like they were referencing things but I wasn't sure
Pat: set me as a resident Google
walpack finds out for us I'll tell you about the movie The Craft the 1996 version that were watching it was directed by Andrew Fleming which you might know from he directed eza Ideal Home which is a movie I hadn't heard of the Paul Rudd's in it and Pat is very excited to know that he has directed several episodes of Emily in Paris
but you love Emily in Paris
Pat: we've recorded since I revealed that did I win recorded I unironically loved Emily in Paris I found a very enjoyable and just delightful and a nice mental vacation from reality
Bret: over there in lighting up a scented candle and Emily in Paris
Pat: walking right literally
Sam: got your pumpkin spice latte in it there's no shame in that
Ash: berating like a puffy vest too well
Pat: I do have a fascist not puffy though
Sam: yeah that's a good point you do need to be watching all that in your vest with Blake your Athleta wear pants on with like your
your fancy slippers
is that how you say it
Pat: I definitely athleisure I definitely have lots of athleisure clothes it's like 900f my wardrobe
I thought it was athleisure I mean I am the I am the basic ones
Sam: I like my version better thank you
setting me straight
Ash: his his first film bad dreams which is a movie we probably never heard of but I bring it up because it was made in 1988 which was his first film which is the year that I was bored and I believe the eaglestone as well so spooky
Bret: the coincidences
Sam: I will say that easy a is a surprisingly great movie
Ash: shot in Ojai Calif
Pat: I was going to try it and say the craft: Legacy
is an upcoming 2020 American supernatural horror film that is a standalone sequel to The
Ash: okay so it is a sequel what does Standalone sequel mean those words cancel eachother out
Bret: Final Destination 2
I think you're right
Pat: so I left that I want to talk about I have my my theory is it really other than the aesthetic of it and the underlying concept and there might be like a few throw away lines that reference the first movie I'll bet like the plots don't really tie together though I bet it's just another group of teenage witches and they will maybe find a book that one of the other ones had but as far as actual plot continuation
Bret: or you're misreading it and it's and it's the craft Lagasse and it's Emeril Lagasse it's becomes a witch
Bret: cast spells
Sam: right weight so is this
Pat: this is my last episode
Holland: what's interesting that it's a sequel It's probably like scream right so when they did Scream 4
that and actually when you watch all four of those movies back-to-back and I'm assuming it slows but like as far as I know there aren't any characters from the original in this new version
but I've only seen the trailer so maybe there are
Pat: there's no
Sam: is this the
Ash: right I don't think so there's a there's a photograph that's referenced in the trailer but it's there's not directly I don't want to like spoil something that I know that happens so I'll just say there's a photograph from the first movie that's in the trailer but I don't think any of the actors are in the movie
Sam: how do you say is this the movie with Rose McGowan in it
Ash: know what movie are you thinking
Pat: green has Rose McGowan
Sam: which scream it was like
Bret: name every movie
Ash: every 100 Practical Magic
Sam: no it's like a witchcraft E1 and it's got no it's got Rose McGowan and the chick the Bitchie chick Practical Magic charms Charmed I'm thinking of Charmed okay
Holland: Charmed I was like she's not in Practical Magic charm bracelet charms
Pat: the show TV show
Sam: set the TV show okay okay nevermind
Ash: I'm glad that you brought that up I have trivia about that but we will get to but this movie is written by Peter filardi you think that's how you say his name she's kind of just done other random B horror movies that you haven't heard of but I bring him up because his first IMDb riding credit is for an episode of MacGyver on the year 1988
I'm really trying here
Bret: I don't know if we're going to be able to pull off making 1988 scary
Ash: but we were born in it was super scared I'm just I'm just saying I meant to love this film is what I'm saying it was made for me
Sam: oh no what if you can I hate it and then where's the spit going to go
Ash: probably so the anybody want to guess what the budget for this film was back in 1996 in Europe producer
Holland: yeah but I suck at guessing movie budgets
I'm very bad at that but I imagine it would be on the lower end
Ash: 1.3 million is hours
Sam: 1.3 that's it
Bret: it doesn't seem like enough pass
Ash: text Michael I'm here
Pat: I've said it I think I took my finger off the piece
Bret: I've seen like the poster for this and I'm going to say it was 22
Sam: I was going to say 23.5 so
Bret: you f****** prices riding me
Sam: I'm sucking prices writing you
Bret: 22 million + $1
Sam: oh my God I am carrying your child and you will take that condescension back thank you
Bret: get out of here
Sam: you get the f*** out
Ash: so it was 50 million meeting Bretton Woods
Sam: how to write 15
Pat: 815 or 501 15
Ash: 15150
Ash: which is not a lie
Sam: 15 that is that is a tight budget no
Bret: other for playing Price is Right wins
Holland: when I imagine most of it went towards like I think it's like Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney and like their Prime
Ash: yeah probably
Holland: so I imagine they're like the most crazy person that would be but there's not a lot of them stuff you know what I mean it's it's really kind of straightforward as far as like dislikes probably some visual effects of stuff but it's not really heavy on any of that other stuff so
Ash: right yeah
Holland: it doesn't look low budget but I can understand why it would
Ash: totally
Pat: I see you like one time but never Campbell's not like the one of them the two main people are Robin Tunney and what's her name starts with a v
Yea Yea verify
Ash: Terrazzo Terrazzo terrazzo
Holland: no farruca bulk there's four of them
Ash: firoozeh
Holland: she's one of the main four
Pat: PS4 and then there's like but they're like the two that are like the good in the bad right like
Bret: wait this is a movie with bad witches
Ash: guess what it made opening weekend of the US
Pat: 1.3 million dollars
Sam: yeah I think that's more of my
Bret: it's more like in the hundreds of thousands I never I didn't know of this movie until they announced the sequel
Sam: this is opening weekend in
Ash: you never heard of The Craft
Bret: I saw a lots of craft talk about the sequel not a lot of talk about the original
Ash: how about you hollyn you got to guess
Holland: so bad no concept
Ash: Uno
Holland: no I just like I I really don't have a good concept of life
Holland: numbers once numbers get into the millions I'm just like I don't know that's a lot of money
Pat: obviously I don't either but that doesn't stop me from Jessie
Sam: holy guacamole
Ash: top of that like that it's like it's not like a million dollars today it's like a million dollars in 1996 to so that life is completely random its opening us weekend gross was 6710996 so it didn't even make half their money back
Pat: what was the total
Ash: on opening weekend yeah opening weekend so the gross us was 24819900 and 36 you want to guess worldwide
Bret: the same number cuz it didn't have a release
Jesus Ash
Holland: I'm no one
Ash: 24818000 clearly did not have a international release before I move on to the cast I realized we'd even talk about who hauling is I told him skipped over that part I'm so sorry Helen I such a dick I'm so excited to talk and be the center of attention
Holland: hi I'm hauling I don't want cuz I don't really do much like I do stuff but it's all behind the scenes right so I work as a producer mostly actually recently just started working for stomach and Company here in Burbank called Apartment D
Sam: I've never heard of them
Holland: I mean I think they're just smaller startup I work for a lot of production companies that no one's ever heard of the do stuff for bigger clients usually yeah I'm very new I literally started this job like 2 weeks ago and I've never worked in like I was working live-action so this is all been very new to me so it's weird it's like almost feels like I'm starting over a little bit
Ash: you're being quite modest though you he's worked for Rocket Jump produced a Disney show
Holland: yeah well for listing everything I did yeah so I used to work for Rocket Jump I won't so Geek and Sundry which we recorded So I got my start I used to be a photographer geekandsundry when I was in college I interned for them once I graduated I worked for Rocket Jump after rocketjump I worked for Loot Crate after Loot Crate I went to work for a company called Eagle Productions or we did the Disney stuff Parker plays but there's like a kids show on Disney XD more recently game show.
Ash: so cool
oh yeah
Holland: because of covid-19
NADA yeah you know
Ash: yeah
Holland: so now I am and now I'm for rain into so much but I'm being I guess which is I got a new experience but I'm I mean I'm just happy to be working
Bret: emotions really really fun
hope you have a good time with that
Holland: yeah I think I will I got its again if an OS just learnt it's so weird it's just learning a whole new
Ash: language and everything
Holland: like way of yah
Bret: tell me more about the craft
Ash: craft craft the story about the craft so forecast
everytime we say the word craft I just think of macaroni and cheese and how hungry I am
Pat: I was thinking of that too that or food or is like Food Services on a production
Ash: craft
Bret: there's a place around the corner that I just found out there's a pork belly mac and cheese
Holland: yes
Ash: so for the cast we have Robin Tunney as I have you guys slept any
and she should recognize her because she's Debra from Empire Records she's yeah she's also in the movie The Zodiac not the good one so fat
Holland: what's the other zodiac
Ash: I don't know I
Holland: didn't know there was a different zodiac
Ash: yeah they're really two at the same time and there was one that like wasn't as good I guess
Bret: my grandparents say that they knew the Zodiac Killer and I don't believe them but they're like positive they're like
Pat: like there was someone they knew socially
Bret: how you can believe something like that like like they know who it is or something in there
Sam: well not Concrete in the court of law know who it is
Bret: like
Pat: don't like Italian bread Richard always to the gym and I knew
Ash: take that RJ take that
Bret: Zodiac killer is like how I saw my neighbors moving a body out of their house at 3 a.m. maybe it wasn't a body but it was body shaped in a heart just like the time you do it anyway just saying maybe we know Zodiac Killer maybe my grandparents are best friends with them
Ash: best friends
Sam: maybe you all watched rear window a little too much
Ash: right we also have another name but I'm going to butcher Kruse or ruthless as I sit or is a balk
is in Almost Famous American History X and she's Dorothy in Return to Oz which is a movie we just we have to do eventually
Pat: Vicki Vallencourt in The Waterboy
Ash: oh really oh no
Holland: oh my gosh I haven't thought about that movie in at least 10 years
Pat: she she played like
the scary like scary really well I feel like cuz there's this movie and then in American History X she's his she's when Ed Norton is full on white supremacist shoes is like also form was from his girlfriend and she's like scared and he is I feel like
Ash: yeah
Bret: I watch that movie in years either I don't know if I want to bring out on the show but
Pat: no need to just just watch the news
Bret: here's the thing is there's a there's a weed shop around the corner that I'm real upset at cuz I don't want to find out if they're bad or not cuz the name of it is Herb stop
Bret: do you know what you did there
Ash: what you have done
Holland: I think they're just trying to be trendy I feel like they don't even
Bret: I guess the Portland's got a lot of Nazis so it could go either way
Pat: are there stoner edgelords
Sam: Oregon has a lot of Nazis don't don't bring for Portland
Ash: have you have you met skinheads
Pat: no I haven't actually met one
Sam: thanks for taking us to a really f****** dark sad place I super appreciate it
Pat: that's what Brett is here for
that's what friends are for
Ash: to be fair I brought up American history anyway moving on
Bret: I have a dark tail for every single thing okay this is what I'm here for
Ash: you do you do have a dark tail for every single thing we also have Neve Campbell as you guys mentioned before who's in like every Scream movie and taking it to another
Holland: Alchemist
Ash: and you don't take it into another dark place also in House of Cards
Holland: is she really I feel like I haven't seen her in anything like I just re-watch all of the nineties movie she's in but yeah I didn't even I had no idea what she was up to
Ash: right that's how I felt about everyone in this movie is everyone is like it hasn't really done a lot notable since this movie
Rachel true
Holland: everyone in that movie what and then also your soulmate mean the cast but Rachel was her name is she looking at the class right now yeah she's the other like mean person in this movie and I mostly see her as like a guest judge on Lake every drag show
Holland: which I think is funny cuz they're like from The Craft
Bret: that's a fantastic place to end up
Ash: yeah that's that's pretty great
Holland: yeah she's always a guest judge on drag shows and I think she has like a she has I want to see she has like a psychic shop in LA or she does reading
Pat: also the love interest in half
Bret: so this is at this is a documentary.
Ash: yes listen I have these notes people Pat you should Google this Rachel throughs what was it
palm reading
Holland: I think it's some sort of psychic shop that she I don't know if she has it currently or used to have it but
Pat: Rachel true psychic
Ash: when you Google you can keep it to yourself
Pat: what will a person comes up is True Heart tarot book
Bret: maple trees tarot for you
Pat: exit Memoir essays from a cult favorite actress artist Rachel true
Ash: bless you guys said half-baked she's also I guess a regular or was a regular on The Drew Carey Show and she got hers
Holland: I love The Drew Carey Show
Ash: yeah right cement forever
Holland: are you still watching all the time as they can
Sam: it's so good it's so good
Holland: you're right
Pat: also Robinson he's doing just fine she was on the that show The Mentalist which I think it's indication so she's probably got realness royalties
Holland: oh my gosh you're right
Ash: we also have Skeet Ulrich who's also from Scream
Holland: I forgot he was in this
I just got so excited
Ash: yeah he's I guess he's also on Riverdale now I've never seen
Holland: yeah he's in Riverdale now which I stopped watching after like the first season but you said
Ash: I've never seen and then we have Christine Taylor which I thought was random she's in Ito you'll know you'll recognize her from dodgeball Zoolander The Wedding Singer you might not recognize her name but you'll recognize her face
Holland: the one who is she married to Ben Stiller
Ash: oh really did they divorce
Pat: what up I'm pretty sure
yeah that's what you're thinking
Ash: another Google yes
yes
Holland: yeah I was like the one that looks was in The Brady Bunch Movie and I always just confuse her with the actual actress for Marcia Brady
Ash: right I forgot about that
Pat: oh yeah oh yeah
Ash: we also have Breckin Meyer which I don't know if you guys probably don't recognize his name but oh yeah
Ash: that's right
Holland: of course I recognized his name cuz he is in Josie and the Pussycats and a bunch of other 90s movies he's in whatsoever or throughout the party
Ash: oh yeah
well he was in Rat Race
Holland: can hardly wait Clueless
Ash: Roadtrip Clueless
Pat: anyway you can either wait either Roadtrip he's in he's in Clueless
Ash: and then I always put it for Sam he was in Robot Chicken of course
oh God I don't know
Holland: I think it's just a random voice actor on that show
Pat: I literally
I just heard his name today it's really funny cuz I was listening to another Park yes they're talking about
Ash: he's like one of the guys like that you just see his face and he looks so charming and just like a teddy bear like his face is just so adorable right
Pat: okay I wasn't going to detours but it's so funny that you say that cuz that was all okay I'll just take me 30 seconds okay so I was listening to
okay
Holland: yeah my friend actually works on that podcast
Holland: friend Angela she's like my best friend from college sorry continue
Pat: oh like Ang who's on the show a bunch of stuff
Holland: yeah she's like my roommate from college
Pat: I was listening to their Joker episode cuz I hate that movie I think it sucks and I was like I bet they had it too and I want it I just am in the mood to hear someone just like it and then they want on this whole life. Phillips like detour and they just took his whole like library and it's talking about road trip
you like the perfect actor for that movie cuz they're actually really shity people in Russia pee cheat on his girlfriend and then it's all about them going to like get the tape so she doesn't find out but we're supposed to root for him and he's a perfect person cuz he's like how he just looks like a sweet boy
Bret: oh goodness
Ash: looks like the movie the passengers or whatever was the one with Chris Pratt and they're like in space yeah
Pat: oh passenger yeah he's a f****** psychopath
Ash: he's a horrible person in the only reason why we like are okay with it cuz we're like all but I love Chris Pratt he's great
Pat: they should have flipped the Habs
Bret: did you ever watch that thing yeah
Pat: you should start this in the movie should have started with Jennifer Lawrence waking up and he's already awake and like yeah my pot is open to and then you learn that he made the conscious decision is more like a horror Thriller thing
Ash: play Make The Shining reference they already make The Shining reference
Bret: wonder if I can read it that I should I said I'll make the edit
well before we completely dive into the trivia which I guess the answer is probably no for most of you except for a baby Holland but I was wondering if anyone else played stiff as a board light as a feather as a kid cuz that was totally a thing that we would do at sleepovers for sure
Holland: Yeah a hundred percent
Pat: never like legit did it but I'm aware of
Ash: I feel like it's a girl question I don't know
Holland: so it didn't really it's not like it legitimately where it's not like you did it and people actually started floating
Pat: I've never been I've never been light as a board
Bret: I remember my mom kept trying to get us to do play that one time and I was like enough with the devil never actually did it
Sam: I'd like a sleepover to like we joked about it and of course like you quickly you're like you say it and then nothing happened so then you move on was never a big deal
Bret: it seems like that you want to see which one of us we can't lift
Holland: sunny sunny
Ash: right I was a fat child so didn't happen often so as I already mentioned Robin Tunney I feel like he is wearing a wig through this whole movie because she shaved her head for her role in Empire Records which wrapped a months before filming this fell so
yeah so that is a wig the whole time
hopefully it's a good one will see and then similar what you were saying hauling butt with actress firouzeh balk she discovered a real magic store called panpipes magickal Marketplace in Hollywood while researching this film and she eventually bought the store and continued operating it until 2001 when she sold it
isn't that amazing
Bret: so everybody went from this into actual Bautista
Ash: baby
Holland: at least two of them
Ash: definitely yeah and like first off I can't believe that this is a store and I haven't been and it's like in LA cuz I really want to go to the store now and in case you're like me and you want to go there it's been renamed to pans Apotheca and it's moved to 4856 Santa Monica Boulevard
I'm sending them business
Holland: yeah I know that store I don't know if I'd been there but I recognize that store yeah I definitely worth it. Is that name I've definitely pasta
Bret: why are you grimacing over there
Ash: I will definitely be visiting as soon as the pandemics over
Pat: I'd like Apothic is not a word Apothecary that word and it's just like you can
Ash: Oh I thought you were giving me s*** forgiving their address out
Pat: no this is like
Bret: I don't have that thought to I was like what is it was going to play online
Holland: it's like Gothika but it's Apotheca
Pat: I just opened up a new restaurant I'm calling it Pat's Bistro it's not that it's kind of like a bistro but different I just decided to change it it's as arbitrary cuz Apothic is arbitrary doesn't mean like
Bret: do you really want to know it's it sounds like it's a it's an erotic Apothecary the apostle
Pat: okay if that's what it is
Ash: that's probably yeah probably
Pat: cool man like good good job I'm wrong you're right you win
I'm down for that
Ash: lawyer of definitely lawyer
what is the second fact that I have about this that is amazing is that while researching this I discovered possibly the best article title I've ever read
buy an article by the UK newspaper the sun titled thousands of witches nervously wait to see if their binding spell cast on Donald Trump actually does spell disaster at today's midterm elections and this is an excellent title
Sam: oh dear what is this article from
Ash: 2018 unfortunately so it clearly didn't work but
I love the idea of all these witches Gathering Together trying to stop Donald Trump though that is a movie I will watch
Sam: you should really try again
Holland: baby may have been every so often I do see an article about
witches against
Ash: which isn't Donald Trump which is against Trump is placement
Bret: there's like a witches Discord group like I want to I want to lurk in the witches Discord group in
Ash: yes
Holland: probably is I actually have I have at least one friend cuz I was racing Unitarian Universalist which is very hippie religion and I have friends that are pagan like practicing Pagan and super witchy and you know there is a very it's a very modern
I'm like I'm sure you can find a Discord in just hang with witches
Bret: that sounds that sound
Ash: and speaking of which is this is probably the spookiest fact about this film but an official website for the stone said that the crew had to return to the location of second time to complete filming that was interrupted by several weird occurrences that caused which consultant Pat Devon to raise an eyebrow as the fog rolled up rolled in at midnight before actresses use actual Wiccan rights and language to invoke powerful forces then as the character Nancy attempts to invoke the DD man in a flock of bats hover over the set and the tide Rose dramatically extinguishing the circle of candles witchcraft Consulting Devon for calls that man in a fictitious creature for the film sounds very close to manannan which is the Gaelic god of the sea
luckily we weren't all swept to see she said Andrew Fleming is quoted every time the girls started the ceremony and only when they would start the ceremony the waves will start coming up tremendously fast pounding heavy then right when Nancy says her line man and fill me right at that exact moment we lost our it was all very
Sam: invoke the right of the Gaelic god of the sea like when you're standing in the ocean
Bret: it's a very interesting anecdote
Ash: baby don't use real Wiccan language
Bret: I kind of like the thought of having a business card that lists my profession as which Consulting
Ash: yeah yes
Bret: but also the tides and their times are inherently knowable information and they might have just done a big old Goofy and film at the wrong time that is what the sounds like
tractors
Pat: get really confusing if you had like a team of consultants and they're trying to fire if the witch consultant
Bret: search consultant
Pat: the whiskey yeah with consultant
Ash: is like a who's on first
Sam: who's on first I love it
which which cancel
Pat: also are you Consulting I know in the context of the movie The Witch consultant was Consulting the film on how to do which stuff
but it's like are you if I'll which consultant is all summoning maybe helps aspiring wishes be better witches
Ash: like a life coach
Sam: I like the princess Academy but for wolves witches
Pat: well like if someone's profession is a is a Management Consultant they're helping companies manage better so they're not like so if I'm a witch consultant or like this f****** potion is just not
Ash: that you know what this sounds like right now the sounds like a short film that you need to write
Bret: yeah and then they can't work 24/7 so you need to which consultants and if their actual which is then you need to know which which which consult
Holland: which witch is which
Ash: which witch is which
Holland: sounds like which which which witch is which was definitely a children's book that I have
Ash: was it really
Holland: yes I remembered that title I don't know who wrote it
Ash: grammar which which is okay I get it I get it
Holland: shows about witches
what's the theme song
Ash: and then my final interesting fact is that just like Sam you mentioned Charmed so the director of this film Andrew Fleming claims the show Charmed Charmed ripped off a pilot he wrote to adapt this film as a TV series both Fox of the WV were interested but it was not picked up the next year Charmed premiered and The Coincidence go even further where this film features the cover of the Smiths song How Soon Is Now which is also the same song used for the opening credits of Charmed
Bret: did the coincidences go even further to wear a court of law found them guilty of stealing the show or is this just hearsay
Sam: it's it's
Ash: and that's that's going to really stop
Sam: it's very hard for the court of law to prove
very hard
Bret: what we've done this a couple of times where people have sued over stolen manuscripts can't remember what the
Sam: you can see it doesn't mean you win
Bret: was The Matrix wasn't it
Ash: thirstea there's the toy soldiers movie where the person one actually able
Pat: the Small Soldiers the one we like the little action figures come to life
Ash: yeah yeah that one
Bret: So Weird movie
Pat: I still remember the Burger King tie in
Ash: I love the Rodeo Burger
Pat: the Rodeo Burger which is a burger with onion rings and barbecue sauce and there was the General toy on the stand doing it Jack Nicholson Few Good Men impression thing you can't handle the Rodeo Burger I don't know why the fuk that's in my brain
Ash: wow as a deep cut
Ash: and now I want the burger
Bret: that's okay everybody's got a couple commercials I'm still talking about the Eli cast
Ash: what what is that
Bret: the one that got unhinged Jojo and then he like eats a whole burger like a snake
Sam: is a terrifying Burger King commercial
Ash: I think I kind of remember that yeah snakes there's 3
Ash: 3000 / 3
yes pythons boas water snakes garter snakes rat snakes and a 10-foot Amazon Constructor
Bret: Thang Thang about
Sam: instructor constrictor
Pat: PetSmart Snakes on a Plane only used 450 lives
Ash: wow that's not surprising
Pat: yeah I was curious
Ash: yeah if you seen the film it's very very clearly CG
Pat: and now I'm willing how many
Holland: oh yeah that was definitely mostly CG that was for sure I'm surprised or any real snakes actually
Ash: yeah right
Pat: kenko ya this way still wins Indiana Jones use mm real snakes
Sam: I was going to ask
Pat: family f****** snakes
Sam: I do not want to be the snake wrangler on a film ever
Pat: so this movie that we can watch that has 3
Holland: over 3000
Ash: yes in one scene
Pat: f****** Christ
Sam: in one scene
Bret: oh yeah why would why would you have 3000
reuse the snakes
Ash: about snakes
Holland: it's like an Easter egg you just looking for them in the background of shots
Sam: I mean if he seen as a gift
Bret: Southeast Leasing
Pat: you got a rash in your snake baby yeah you can't blow your whole snake budget and one take come on
Bret: there's a snake in every shot
Sam: what what if they need different types of snakes you know like desert snakes are very different from jungle snakes and they're very different from water snake
except except if the snakes were all drowned cuz they weren't water that's sad but like the rest of the time
Ash: oh my God they just throw them in the water and they just don't dive
Bret: now this isn't what is a mile
Holland: Milo and Otis
Holland: that was the worst
Sam: oh don't don't f****** Teresa this come on Fred f****** cheap you're sad s*** away
are they throw a f***
Pat: listen that's what he glisan
Holland: learning that was the worst because I remember watching a movie as a child and then learning that as an adult was like horrifying
from like the 70s
Sam: yeah yeah it is is terrifying cuz I bought it for like $5 at Target in college and then I was watching it was like I can't wait to see how bad the CG is and then I wash a like that was a real f****** kidding going off a cliff oh my God and then threw it away
Ash: behind the scenes
incriminate yourself
Holland: know the movie itself if they basically just admitted that in the movie that used multiple animals cuz they were just real stunts
Bret: they did have a behind the scenes of the Lemmings thing
footage of the death of The Wider.
Ash: oh yeah there is
I also just watch
Sam: yeah it's Disney was not smart about that alright thanks Brett for this aside
Pat: it's it's it's okay it's like the balance of nature the balance of the podcast action Sam deliver witty yet insightful Nuance assessments of the film's watch I'm a f****** clown and a buffoon there's nothing about you say it but I make people laugh occasionally
Ash: no you bring us a big ass Spider songs so
Sam: you bring so much Pat don't talk down on yourself
Sam: it's so good
Bret: now you're messing with the big ass spider
Ash: you should you should hear at Holland I'll send it to you
Pat: I just love that we had the other discussion that was able to supply the Blink-182 discussion was able to supply the the other part of that that's amazing
Bret: I turn Pat's freestyle rap into a real rap last episode
Ash: yes that's great
I was going to bring it down even more invention that I just watch Friday the 13th where they kill a real snake on screen like you see it
I was like you can't tell me this is a fake
Sam: let's let's get off of the animal murder please
Ash: okay Patsy knit I know Brett and Sam you said you haven't I haven't actually seen it but hauling you see it right
Holland: I seen it but it's definitely been a few years like I can't think of the last time I seen it and I've actually been cuz usually every year I re-watch scream and I just rewatched all the Final Destination movies and I watch The Faculty I've been watching a lot of like 90s like horror and cold stuff from that era but then I was and it was weird cuz you message me and I was like
movies in highschool I really don't know how long it's been so
Ash: oh wow do you remember liking it
Holland: I I mean I like it I think just
those like cult 90s movies I think I just love all of them by default
I do remember liking it
Ash: it's like part of your identity
Holland: it really is but again it's it's it's been a while since I have
watched it
Ash: do you think it'll hold of or do you think it's going to be horribly 90s and Subway
Holland: hold up I thought I don't know again in my opinion A lot of that stuff holds
because I think it's like a combination of things that usually like the cast like I honestly I didn't remember that Skeet Ulrich or Breckin Meyer in this and that excites me the music is always usually
great because it's usually like a time capsule of life
and this case 1996 and then you brought it the How Soon Is Now cover which I forgot is in this movie cuz I just think of it as The Charmed theme song which is funny
but yeah
I remember liking it but I also can't remember
are very few things I actually remember about that
to be honest
Ash: so hopefully hopefully you'll feel like it
Holland: I think it'll all come rushing back there I think it's one of those movies that like when I'm seeing it'll be like oh yeah this
Ash: like 10 seconds before it happens
cat you've seen it what are your predictions spots
Pat: it's been a long time I think I was a teenager last time I saw it
Define
like I don't think it's any bad I don't think
Pat: I think there are going to be a couple parts where it's 90s or will show the
Ash: 90s or showing cover-up
Pat: 90s or showing
Bret: your 97
Sam: that's an excellent t-shirt idea
Pat: I mean if you want me to say the like I think it will likely be that positive experience that you know.
watch a haunting of Bly Manor currently
Holland: I haven't watched
Pat: it's like yeah it's like real slow burn from the early to it very slow burn but there's a few moments that
Ash: as I watched the trailer and I was like this looks like garbage but everyone's watching it and talking about it on Twitter and so
Holland: I loved Hill house so I want to at least give it a chance
Ash: okay I'll try to check it out
Sam you haven't seen this movie
Sam: I've not seen it I know very little about it but I love all Halloween movies so I'm really
Bret: Halloween movies
Sam: will all none
Bret: you made a big state
Sam: I'm going to clarify hold your butt all non scary Halloween movies
Ash: yeah
Holland: that's not that's very specific
Bret: Sam loves all Halloween children's movies
Sam: should I know
Holland: spell hocus pocus
Pat: like six movies yeah it's like it's like kids
Bret: Hocus Pocus
Sam: there are there more than one
Halloweentown is is sad
Ash: so the Disney ones
Holland: there's three of those so yeah
oh yes
Sam: yeah I know but like like Sleepy Hollow and then like Bram Strokers Dracula Labyrinth you know anything kind of in that likes
Bret: the Halloween movie
Sam: not officially but I like
Ash: that's why we're doing this
Pat: I have no cuz this is going to be coming out still within the season right yeah okay for Sam 100
Holland: oh my God yeah that's okay
Pat: okay so I know I'm late to the party on that we had see that but it was so beautiful and I really enjoyed it and I want ya
Ash: no I haven't seen it all have to check it out
Pat: mountain bike 2015 or 2014 Jesus
Holland: oh you have to watch it
I didn't even realize it's been 5 years
Pat: it's so good it's beautiful it's delightful
a movie likes cuz it's only 10
Ash: is it on Netflix
Pat: Hulu or HBO
Ash: okay cool well added to the list of bazillion things I need to watch
Pat: Halle Berry Halloween vibe
Ash: so what is your prediction
Sam: I'm expecting it to kind of fall in the realm of Practical Magic but hopefully have a tickets off maybe a little bit more seriously I'm hoping
so yeah I'm very excited I love Halloween and this fall time is my favorite time of year and I love watching movies that feel cozy and I hope it will feel cozy with like a touch of spooky but not real
Ash: right yeah
I feel like we should do Practical Magic and have Maddie back on for it and I don't know why I just feel like he'd have a lot to say about that
Sam: there is a lot to say about practical man
Ash: you remember much about it
yeah I remember liking it
Holland: Australian Practical Magic is definitely more rom-coms
Ash: yeah yeah
Holland: like the craft is not
Ash: top rom-coms
how are you
Bret: who wrote this
IMDb
Ash: I told you Peter Phil Dario
Holland: we already discussed
Sam: I thought you just said who directed
Holland: an episode of MacGyver
Sam: oh no you said they fall
Ash: no I said Peter
Holland: 1988
Ash: yeah cuz he wrote for MacGyver in 1988
Sam: yep that's right
Ash: he has done only other bad well I won't say that I have not seen them he has done other B horror movies you have never heard of that's what I will say that's all he's done
Holland: well yes
Bret: I wonder if this movie doesn't sound like it's got too much problematic stuff in it but there's always that like a movie that sounds like it's written about women but by a dude and at and I just kind of Wonder like the last few of those we've come across have been like this is not is not great but this being magic and about witches
Holland: oh he wrote flatliners flatliners
Ash: right he did that one too
Bret: man this is this whole this whole pre-show has been a list of names and movies that I haven't seen I've never felt more out of the loop on this podcast then then the cast and the the outside world connection so this yeah this is like my
Holland: so interesting cuz I feel so in tune
Bret: yeah this is like I'm always talking about the the generation gap or whatever this is I missed everything about this this is just totally new for me but I do enjoy which contest so I anticipate that I'm going to like this phone
Bret: cancel
Bret: as long as they stick to witching and not to
Ash: kitchen
Bret: not to know that's not what I was going to say Ivo it didn't cross my mind
Sam: about the kitchen
Bret: all things that rhyme
Ash: oh no that would be bad
Bret: no but see but that's the thing I'm worried about is Dick tuition and not to some guy riding them into the kitchen there you go that's what I'm concerned about High Hopes high hopes
Pat: would you stay here your credit senses
Sam: we should leave now
Ash: Righteous Cuts the rest of the podcast it's just there's no more vodka
is that someone taking that is that a thing
Pat: just by thinking I think I think he's cranky if his blood sugar is low Brett Tussionex in the kitchen
Bret: now
Ash: all the punch cast is already taken
Sam: nobody needs a podcast about puns nobody
Ash: man
Bret: did everybody say anything I feel like I shouldn't really
Ash: I didn't say my thing yeah so I mean I definitely knew about this movie I definitely knew about the stiff as a board light as a feather but I've never seen it which I feel like this totally would have been a movie I would have seen and some movie that people brought up I feel like multiple times on this podcast they've been like oh you guys should do this one you'd like it so I'm excited I hope that I liked it
Bret: my cat just walked across the laptop
Bret: don't do it again
Ash: rivalus sales cat just showed us it's a butthole
Bret: very sorry
Ash: right across the hot cat Hot Cat making herself known again
Sam: she is a black cat she's black and orange
Ash: she is a black cat she's Halloween cat
Bret: what's the scariest thing that's ever happened on the show
Sam: oh great now the cat and dog are going to fight quick stay or thing before Mayhem happens
Ash: so excited I coming at it with positive intent but I'm also apprehensive because I did did the research and I have seen
percentage so I'm hesitant but I'm hoping that it's it's fun I just watched like I said Friday the 13th which as I I live-tweeted on Twitter and as I said on Twitter is that a good movie no does it have a great plot absolutely not is there good acting not at all but is it fun yes and that's what I'm hoping this will be it will just be fun and it doesn't matter if it's a good plot or not
soul of the sea
Sam: if it is bodies the soul of the Season like a pumpkin spice latte then I'll be happy
Ash: this feels like it's very pumpkin spice latte the movie
Bret: well with that
pause recording and go and watch the craft and we will return with our
Pat: hey brat are you upset about all the word play cuz your eyes
right now Brett is like cats wagon is one I really regret hits
Bret: what's this song
Pat: all the stuff has been recorded
Ash: is the Season of the Witch
second that work
Ash: I don't know any other song There's a Portishead song
Holland: SMS
Sam: yeah something yet to be
Holland: Glory Box which it was weird because Glory Box wasn't in the credits but it sounded like Glory Box or like is it just a different Portishead songs that sounds exactly the same
Ash: and it was like a different version of the song that I've ever heard to I was like I know the song but this sounds weird it was weird
Holland: so I'm wondering cuz there is a Portishead song in the credits but I only really no quarter Glory Box so then I was like maybe I'll Portishead just sounds exactly like Glory Box
Ash: it does all sound the same it does
Sam: no the car
Pat: are we talking about the opening or the end credits to the song opening credits with something
Ash: no it was what she was running from the rapey guy
Holland: no the scene we are worship
Ash: I can confirm that it was Portishead because I was watching a movie with subtitles on because Bryce was cooking dinner and I can never steer RTV when he's cooking dinner cuz it's going to like the same room and so I had the subtitles on and it did say Portishead but it didn't I don't remember the name of the song but it absolutely was
Bret: that was a very effective soundtrack choice though
Sam: oh yeah yeah yeah
Ash: Bryce was like cooking dinner and he was like what this movie made in the 90s
Pat: well man
Ash: oh yeah
Bret: do what you say in the first half
Pat: the opening credits though were that was an interesting choice in the clouds with that weird font
Bret: Unitus is showing
Holland: very nice
Sam: 90s shows
Pat: yeah
Holland: it's like basically papyrus
Pat: yeah yeah I don't be mean enough to get you and I don't like it being mean but like
Holland: it reminds me of Buffy which like I don't know how you feel about Buffy but that's like the Vibes that gives me and I don't like worms my heart
Ash: I can see that yeah
Pat: I just feel like the clouds and the the way they credits opening credits looked very like Amateur hour like something a kid in like a student film is what it reminded me of
Pat: I know I know I know
Ash: I will say students in 1996 could not afford the helicopter to get those shots path
Bret: but now it's totally like the B-Team shots like we need an opening thing and like the directors gone like we still have the camera
Holland: it's basically just all stock footage
yeah
Ash: oh yeah it looks like stock footage for sure
for sure I will agree with you Pat that that particular part in film was the best but like some of the visual effects in this film are shockingly good
Bret: they were so good
Pat: yeah I know yeah
Sam: this is this this is one of those magical movies where I feel like
Ash: yeah totally
Sam: like their visual effects were just right and they had that low budget because if they had had any more of a budget you know they would have spent it on effects and freaking ruined it but the things they could do for low-budget were perfect for the tone of the movie and it works so well
Pat: Oh you mean magical in like an abstract sense of like the fact that it came together that well as magical because they're literally was magic in the movie also
Sam: not. Sorry I was not like you to play on the plot of them being witches doing magic I'm talking about like they hit that tight. All right that's enough go to bed Hamlet lie down
yes yes
Sam: seeing eye dog
Holland: I was going to say that my memory of recording this podcast last time was cherub and I remember at the time he was training to be like what is the word for that like a service dog or whatever
Sam: yeah she flunked
Holland: and that he failed so your RC flying stat so you got to keep her and I'm just that dog is Magic but this is the cutest dog so I'm so happy
Ash: she is so cute
Sam: she's right over there we have another one they let us try again whether that was wise or not so now we've got to
Holland: it was so early
Bret: remember when you came on for Independence Day right and it was like yeah this is unusual cuz we're recording at like 8 a.m. and so like as long as there's dogs
Sam: I think it had to be early
I think Nick was in Italy
Ash: why are you recording so early oh you're about to answer my question
Bret: we were doing the Double Days
Sam: Nick was in Italy
Holland: yeah he was he was in Europe somewhere
Ash: oh that's right he wasn't Italy yeah
Pat: ATM is not really okay
Sam: no it was actually I think it was like 6 a.m.
Bret: lady 8 a.m. is like
Holland: yeah like I definitely got up super early
Bret: 8 a.m. is freelance 3 a.m.
Pat: am I 8 a.m. I've been up for two hours yeah at your 8 a.m. like 5 hours
Sam: you know we don't officially have kids yet let us enjoy this path
Pat: no I know yes good luck well you just get the one I guess can trade off now when you have the one also I thought was really interesting that they cast an actor to play Sarah stepmom for the one seen on the airplane sitting next to her and her dad and then we never see her again
Ash: you're the picture
Sam: box2d house once
Holland: she's in the house
is that Mom is in the house
Pat: know the picture was a picture with your mom
Bret: pictures her other barracks
Sam: pictures of mom
Ash: stepmom right
Pat: stepmom heard turn dad's wife they cast and they has an actor to play her on the plane in the opening credits no lot just sitting there
Holland: she's in she's in the house when they first got there
Bret: I bet she had like a ton of lions and they just cut it all out
Holland: it's possible that they shot all of it but I like I personally appreciate cuz I thought that was something I was thinking of where it's like you know they have the parents but they're not in the movie I was thinking about that mostly would like skillrex character in like the male characters where it's like they've obviously cast these people to be in this movie but they're really not a huge part of the plot like they're motivating force but they're not really in it and I appreciate that actually because it really is about like
clothes for girls and foremost in the movie it's just that
it's completely possible
Pat: Brett Hudson something I think there are a lot of scenes shot that did not land on The Cutting Room floor cuz their stuff they allude to that feels like I used to be so nice I like I haven't seen one guy but other than that
Holland: are personality her personality completely changes
she's a completely different personality
Pat: it does she's more confident but I don't see her being outright mean at the point when Sarah calls her out
Ash: she doesn't say that she's mean she says she's become narcissistic
Sam: Sheetz
Bret: yeah she said you used to be so nice and it was
Pat: he said he used to be so nice which the implication is your not nice now Ergo mean
Holland: what do you put in because in the beginning of the movie she's the one that's like oh let her sit with like she's like oh I thought I was strong class and she wants to sit with them
she's the nice one out of the group
Pat: I agree with you I'm saying I agree she was nice she's a confident swarthy and pump saying I didn't really see any scenes that would warrant that reaction from Sarah towards her and then missed is what I'm saying
Ash: I think I get it though cuz like she's just she's just you know she it's the evolution of it happening like it gets to that point right where they confront her in the bathroom and then this girl who was the nice one she's like
Bret: what the hell are you sleeping
Ash: I can't remember what she has some sort to quit before they go out the door that I was like woah oh ice cold like she's really a b**** now you know like yeah yeah yeah
Pat: what are you sleeping cuz it cuz I think I didn't also said that was an implication that they were f****** with her dreams
Bret: you know I would argue that she got nicer as the film went on she told that guy he had a nice butt
Sam: but yeah
Italy gets a crossbow
Holland: I know that's only possible but I don't know I still think the point gets across that I think Neve Campbell is definitely
Pat: it does I'm just for some reason that stood out to me
I just went a lot faster than I remember
Ash: I think you're trying to add too much logic to teenage girl dialogue like what she said is totally what a teenage girl would say to another teenage girl like this film I think like at the beginning I said oh you know it probably won't have the best plot but whatever it'll be fun I was shocked at how well this movie and cap slates what it's like to be a teenage girl and just how f****** they can be to each other so mean
Holland: I felt the same way because I remember Brett was like oh I wonder how this is going to be cuz like a dude is writing a book about a bunch of teenage girls and I was like oh that's true like maybe this is not going to age well but I don't know it totally works I think it's a really accurate portrayal of
Sam: I think it was just
Ash: totally I'm shocked is very well done
Sam: dialogue and like the first third of the movie definitely felt super forced so like between Sarah and The Jock guy when it was like weirdly 80-yard I was like this feels like it's written by an adult but then it totally like like picked yourself up and got way better so I was like okay cool I'm glad we're over that
so bad
Holland: I love that you mention the ATR because I was thinking the same thing cuz I started it and it was like us so weird and then I was like okay they definitely like a r e scripted this
Ash: I missed it cuz I was reading the subtitles when did it happen
Sam: it was pretty bad
Holland: they're clearly like trying to set up the prologue which I mean you have to do but it's like her first conversation with him
you can tell it's a tiara
Ash: at the table at lunch
Holland: yeah when she's like when she's first meeting him
Ash: Tasha okay it's probably a tiara cuz like look at all the f****** people the background there's no way they got clean sound yeah
Bret: yeah I just kind of got the impression that I think she was talking too softly cuz there's no way you get that kind of clarity even with like a boom overhead she just like
Sam: and you could see it on the way her lips move to like a whisper weird for this very clear loud voice I'm hearing you mentioned the plot
I'm freaking bored with how beautifully succinct and self-contained this plot is
Lake Dam
Ash: and all of the issues that hits on is like bow
Sam: yeah and like like cat always talks about how like the best villains are the villains that you can like relate to holyshit lannisport girls like grown up with an abusive step daddy like beats her mom like she's has to be the adult and like
yeah you can totally see how having power and make her feel safe from all the people that it her whole life and then you just got a little too like out of hand she definitely started in the right place
Sam: really well done I'm actually so surprised because I thought it would be like that it was trash throw away you know pot like a fun cute but like no actually there's a lot there
Pat: I've been wrong so many times in the first half of this podcast it's okay
Holland: I was yeah I think I was nervous cuz I think it was Pat brought up like how it was like oh the good witch in the bad witch nose like oh no it's not like that's not the things that you know from the beginning like they're all friends
Pat: I'm okay being wrong I mean I'll admit I'm okay admitting I was wrong
Holland: happens but not until like the last 30 minutes
Sam: yeah but they did a really good job of not giving it away too soon
because I was pretty surprised with that you know where they went you'd expect it to be like oh the weird zombie of the boyfriend dude that they killed or like something weird or like the universe is going to implode because they abuse their power or something but the fact that it's like one of them yeah it was really well done and like she's a little weird but then you don't know like this is for your teenager that's her just being protective because she's been so like misunderstood or whole life and hurt yeah but they did a great job of like
just walking that line so delicately
and a rapist yeah
Ash: I watched the trailer for the 2nd the new one that's coming out and I really wish I hadn't because it kind of alluded to that chick becoming evil and so I was like I kind of went in with that expectation and knew it was going to happen but they still did such a great job because even at her turning point I was like I totally understand and relate to you you know like I get where you're coming from and you just got carried away and out of control and it's like the dude she murders it's like you know he was a dick and did try to rape her but like yeah
Holland: yeah but the thing I was going to say to is that
Ash: so you could argue that was the magic
Holland: but I think every watching this I realize what happens when the beginning is there setting up from the beginning where it's like even though this guy's a total dick they set up the fact that even though like for a couple character f****** hates him but it's because obviously he slept with her and then never talk to her again so it's like they set that up from the beginning that she's
so you know what I mean and it's like and it happens it's like a guy could be the biggest a****** but like I don't know there's nothing worse than someone like showing interest in you and the bean like oh just kidding and I wanted to sleep with you and now I'm never going to talk to you again so it's like they do set that up from the beginning so like as much as guy sucks I think that's such a huge underlying factor in their friendship because he's she's immediately like kind of jealous of her she's like oh well he likes you now this guy's an a****** and here's why
Ash: yes yes
Pat: Lizzy Caplan character
Holland: Janis Janis Ian
Sam: it's a bit like you know in Mean Girls Where Regina George used to be friends with on forgetting the character's name with the goth chick and so like that's Janice yeah and that's why she befriends Sadie Saturday
Holland: I think so yeah I'm so scared
Ash: cat
Sam: can't remember Lizzie Lawrence character and that's why she befriends her caddy thank you cuz she wants to get back at Regina for like being a dick to her in elementary school you know which is an understandable motivation but it's like he's just so interesting to watch these characters like self-sabotage what could have been a really good healthy thing because of their own like pain and suffering
Bret: can I play the plate up the whole life growing jealousy thing pretty well too
or is that one scene like after they the magic worked for the first time where they're all like sitting out on the lawn and they're like you know what's wrong with her and her magic didn't work also is like the three of them were talking and she was in the background like not a part of it
Holland: what line is so good cuz she's
Ash: yeah well and they're talking about the boy right but the voice
Holland: no the line the line is when rachelle's like she doesn't want to be white trash or something and I was like I told her she's white and it's just really funny
Ash: yeah it's so great
Sam: that cracks me up cuz it's so high school like she's just trivializing her friends like pain but in like a very true and honest with not very kind
totally
Ash: the kind that only High School Kids Camp
no you're supposed to
Sam: no you're not you're great
Holland: there's also it's like I think I think they are sorry I'm going to I'm talking so much but I really like they I didn't I forgot how well they handled like racism is this movie
Ash: I know
at first I was like
Holland: I forgot that Christine Taylor's character is just terrible
Pat: I forgot how blatant it will how like how I should just like other holy s*** I forgot that like that word and next you just straight up about it yeah
Holland: yeah but it is kind of funny cuz she's like oh she doesn't want to be white trash and I'm like yeah it's like you don't really have sympathy for that situation because you literally have someone like
overtly racist to you because you're black
Sam: throwing slurs at you yeah
Pat: the one thing is I know that they're trying to show like to have the kind of thing of people going too far with stuff and like
Holland: they totally do
Pat: except in in with Rochelle case with it was it Laura or Laurie was the racist girls named like like like they felt like I don't feel bad about that at all like
Pat: maybe not but I don't know but like f*** that races forever I guess he did try to commit sexual assault select
Holland: it's hard cuz you're a dude I feel like this like a very different Viewpoint coming into this where it's like
yeah I mean the worst thing mosquito or does it tries to rape her which technically it's because he's under he's under like a spell when it happens
Pat: yes no no I just want that back yes f*** him forever to yeah yeah
Ash: yeah he's under the spell
yeah I mean at the end of the day no one deserves to die right but I think
Ash: omigod Devastator
Holland: this movie also has a really good job of handling the situation where it's like you wish ill on someone right and then it's like something really bad actually happens then you're just like oh wait just kidding like I didn't want this to happen to this person and like the stuff with Christine Taylor character seems really superficial but to a high-school girl who is like the most popular girl in school like losing your hair and having sores on your head is like worse than dying so
Sam: and if you even see kind of like the Fallout of her losing her hair at the party when she comes up to Rochelle ice Rochelle right and she's like you know like like I need a friend like she lost her hair on the surface but you can tell the way they wrote us Ellie she lost everything she lost all her friends she lost her support system she lost her confidence so
Bret: and it's just like yeah High
Sam: which is exactly what she deserves but it's really interesting and like really well done cuz he don't beat you over the head with it you know which is something like
girls notice these subtleties you know they notice the difference between high and high you know like and they don't have to be like all of my friends abandoned me and I don't have any friends that will you be my friend like they didn't have to spell it out
Bret: and also a little credit to how they wrote that scene to cuz we've had too many movies on this show where it's just like they would go out of their way to spell it out for you like oh no no one's my friend anymore in like that that would have been like actual dialogue that she would have spoken but it's like they let the acting tell it which is pretty nice
Sam: yeah yeah it was really well done. I can't still can't believe it guys holy crap
Pat: antithesis
Ash: and a further to further Hollins point also like there's a point in the movie when Raquel they're all like drinking from the cup with the blood and she says that she just wants the strength to learn how to not hate those who hate her and like that's the physicist anticipation of her whole story yeah and and you know it's like yes this person said this horrible racist thing and not just racist to you know like she's clearly putting down the way she looks and her hair and everything
oh yeah
Holland: also like it hurts when you dive and fall on your back that was like vicious like that is painful
Ash: yeah but I've been at the end of the day she's like you know like trying to I guess turn the other cheek you know like not sync to the same level as as this other girl and I mean
Sam: I was going to say
Holland: because she's a nice black girl and she has to do that because that's what Society wants her to do
Sam: also asking to say I've been kind of kind of a poignant like really kind look at like what it's like I mean it thinks it reminds me of that activists who during the black lives matter came out and said like white people are really lucky that black people just want equality and not Revenge which is like definitely reflected in her character which is just like for a high schooler has been treated so poorly like a really profound like outlook on life like she just wants to be a better person which
are you play makes her one of the best people in the like it's Way Beyond her years
Ash: she's even the one questioning at the end she's like this seems like too much she's like we've gone too far you know when they're all in there at her house and she's like I'm not going upstairs like let's stop harassing Us girl
Holland: I think she's the most down-to-earth character throughout because even when she's like braiding
hair into her hair to do like the protection spell or whatever and she even asked like what you think's going to happen to her like she from the get-go is like what do you think's going to happen like this is like no one else cares until they're in it so
Sam: really well done
Ash: true totally yeah yeah it's it's just a totally like if you want to know what it's like to be a teenage girl in high school like this just so attached lease it like I was talking to Bryce afterwards and telling him how like you know no magic was at fault but I totally had like the circle of friends that we were like best girlfriends and then one day you like the same guy one of the other ones lights or who knows like you do something and just like the next day you're out and suddenly they're all talking s*** about you and spreading rumors about you around school and you just don't you have no idea why cuz one of them decided they hated you and all the others like decided that this this is the popular leader of the group so we're following what she says and it's so accurate to the painful experience and then your soul
you know conscious of your looks in your body and like all these other girls will say horrible like I even had my like my friend a good friend that would I was overweight in high school which I know we've talked about before I think it was like a size 22 jeans or something and my friend would have the balls to stand there and complain to me because she was a size 2 and not a zero and I'm just like that's the type of s*** you're dealing with is like a teenage girl you know how do you think that makes me size 22 feel about myself
Holland: get that s*** as an adult to
usually involving like money or something like more you know
Ash: oh yeah
Sam: like that person that came out on Twitter that was like biting sucks cuz he thinks if you make $400
Ash: oh my God
Pat: I remember that it is like all that leaves you is like $1
Sam: yeah
any food that you could want
Pat: imagine imagine imagine after everything that you need to like maintain your life is paid for so like rent or mortgage all insurances food utilities so everything that requires two like survive okay
Ash: during a pandemic 2
Pat: and then you still and then you still have $1
Sam: every month and don't forget
Pat: are you like that song
yeah whatever he was like
Bret: miscellaneous spending
Sam: don't forget that included like $2
oh my God
Bret: they have a separate category for wife spend
Holland: I remember something similar to this happened when I was in college so that was like I don't know maybe like 6 years ago but it was like someone had said something it was talking about how like how hard it is to be a college student like how expensive tuition is like Bubba blah and someone was like
Holland: I forgot to find the article but it was so ridiculous and it was someone breaking down like their budget there was also like someone who clearly didn't have to spend any money on tuition war room and board or having an apartment or anything like I just like college was most stressful for years of my life right cuz I was like every semester I was like am I going to be able to like come back to school or am I cuz I went to like film school right and everyone's like has just like money that they're just like
throw it away
Ash: oh yeah bunch of rich kids go to film School
I know what you're talking about right
Sam: yeah where you at
Holland: and it was like the most jarring experience I really want to find the article because it was basically breaking out someone's budget and they're like all this person has no money they're like this person has no money because they have like whatever a month and then I was like I literally work two jobs and go to school and I'm broke I'm sorry to an apartment with four people
Sam: anyway that you like dang I really need 8 hours on Sunday to finish my project but I really need the $48 that I learned you know working at Trader Joe's that day like s***
Holland: yeah I'm like it's fine I just don't sleep I'm like I work at the Gap and then I also do like
I think I was like a social media splash photography assistant for like a flower Boutique and then it was like so wild like looking back on it like again College was probably the most stressful for you
I'd like to think it made me into a better person but it is crazy to talk to people about like college or some like that and they're like I have no loans
Holland: cool
Sam: yeah we out for y'all
Ash: I know people like that too I had the same experience cuz like I paid for my own College as well like all the loads were taken out in my name and I was paying for everything myself but my parents didn't have the money and then on top of that you go to film school at least at my film school they don't pay for your films that you're making so on top of that
Holland: no you have to you have to buy the physical fit
Ash: yeah you have to buy the film you have to buy all your props used to pay for the whole budget and my Philips cool it was every two months you're making a 10-minute short and that s***'s expensive email
Sam: they should have
Ash: and then my thesis film was like $10
Sam: book a load that's so much money especially for cost
Holland: I didn't even make it this is still I wrote an essay because I was I'm just venting at this point but because I was also in the honors program I for My Capstone I was able to just write a thesis like a hundred page thesis or something like that instead of doing my thesis film so I just wrote a really f****** long paper
Ash: that's nice yeah I mean there were ways to get around it at my school to like if you if you helped out on someone else's thesis film you could also like count that as your thesis film as long as you were doing what you were like what you wanted to do
Holland: people wouldn't hire me onto their stuff because I didn't have enough experience like on said experience because our Film School operated like yes it was like
that's why I end up getting into YouTube I think in the long run it helped because I started getting into YouTube and like making my own stuff and I think that's why that happened cuz I couldn't do anything else but yeah it's like so frustrating
Ash: Pinterest
Bret: I feel like blacking out art school is like the first step on the path degree
Holland: garage
Sam: Splunk I graduated I just got lucky am I still in school was just the cost of like reams of paper
Jesus Ashton just f****** shooting daggers omigod you graduated to how's your path to Greatness
Ash: are you in the past the greatest just an a****** I'm so so great
Pat: I mean I don't know what you heard
Pat: she directed a short film written by this really awesome of becoming writer like
Pat: I don't know if you heard so yeah
Sam: crap
Pat: no
Holland: sorry I am I apologize for bringing this up because obviously everyone has it's a sore subject for all of us
Pat: I think my favorite parts of the show are these like the tangents I think it's my favorite and it's been that was really fun for me to kind of just listen is usually the one who like jerks the steering wheel off into a tangent it was fun for me to be a passenger on that one
Ash: I feel really bad now I love you Sia
Ash: I couldn't resist it it was right there
Bret: that's our whole Generations like big big Universal like reveal like surprise college is a scam and like damn
Ash: yeah yeah
Pat: unless if you see that thing behind me unless you sacrifice your physical well-being
Holland: oh I did that
Sam: says the literal biohacker the most fit one of us
Pat: okay football has destroyed my body but who are much closer to the actual age of the teenagers so good like these
he's grown at
Ash: I was a fact I found for this to one of the girls is almost thirty right
Pat: she at yes okay I'm going to go from youngest to oldest youngest I haven't pulled up Breckin Meyer and threw the ball or 22
221 with a film so is 22 and it came out
Christine Taylor was 25 and 26
and Rachel true was the f30
Sam: Rachel was doing that played Sarah
Pat: almost 30 Rochelle
Holland: black don't crack anyway
Pat: I feel like she's actually I feel like she like look the youngest she looks the youngest
yeah she was 30 at the time 2
Holland: what's golden how old is she now yeah how old it well that's what it is that it is a known fact that if if you're not wait you age way slower than everyone else
Pat: she was born in 66
Holland: what is a fact
Ash: sucks to be u y dias
Holland: what is it that's very funny but that means now she has to be like that was 96 just beat her late forties she still looks young that's why I'm more surprised cuz I'm like
Pat: I thought the worst offender was skeet that m***********
looks like he could have had a kid at that school same school they were going to
Holland: I don't know if his hair his hair was much shorter than his hair usually is so because his hair was shorter I was like you look young you don't have your long hair I don't know but
Pat: I was waiting for a freshman to walk by and say hey there
Sam: Botox
Holland: Rachel true is like 2 years younger than my mom which is crazy cuz my mom looks her age and Rachel True Looks like still very young I'm trying to find a recent photo of her
Pat: 5455 Highway 54
Holland: no she's she won't be weight she was 66
Ash: yeah the one that was 30 I was like didn't think that she look that old until we saw her the bathing suit and I was like that is not a young woman's body that is a well matured at her prime woman's body
Pat: hahaha
Sam: really I just looked at that maybe it's cuz I'm pregnant but I was like damn her stomach is so flat
Holland: now I'm like on Rachel truth Instagram
Holland: she looks real good for her age
Pat: okay again usually what I do is I go down some kind of online Rabbit Hole where I'm looking at looking up stuff was or trying to record
Holland: it happens it happens
Bret: yeah half a path audio is just Mouse click
Pat: this is important is important for the show
Ash: but we
Sam: I will say watching this like made me very excited for the next one
Holland: actually
Sam: and I mean there's a lot to go on
Holland: yeah I was like but speaking to a spot up on what we've been talking about like one of my I watch the trailer and weirdly I didn't get any spoilers from it but I guess I already knew what I was going to be spoiled for my main takeaway from that trailer was like David duchovny's in this what but they all look so young
but that's that's the thing though it's like now they actually cast teenagers as teenagers and in watching that trailer like oh these are obviously teenage girls because I remember just the backlash online and it was like why is everyone mad I was like this movie is not for you like you have the craft if you care so much re-watched the craft like this is for like the next Generations version of this movie
Holland: I don't know cuz I I literally I texted my sister when I run to this and I like a rented this movie I don't know if you seen it but my sister's 19 she's turning 20 next year but she we just feel we're like eight nine years apart in age and she just feel so much younger than me so I was like oh you should watch this and I'm also like I don't know you might not like this movie the new one like that might make way more sense for you than this move
Ash: is the trailer for the new one they just had to hide the photo of Nancy
like they're like holding it and so I thought in my head I thought that they were going to like trap her in a photo or something
it's like the photo that I think you know they cut the photo or her out of the coven or whatever
Holland: yeah well in theory like she could be someone's mom like I feel like someone in this movie is probably someone's Perry
Pat: yeah
Holland: and then maybe it's the same thing where it's like I died when my mom gave birth to me or like whatever but
they could just be the next generation of that
Ash: or the mom died
Bret: some kind of Palpatine scenario
Holland: in the next but in the next movie right it would be if it's the same plot of this movie would be like oh my mom died giving birth to me
Ash: right yeah you said I died when my mom gave birth to me and I was like what she did
Pat: that's how she has her power she's an undead Lich Lord yeah
Holland: maybe the main character is a ghost it's a ghost witch
Sarah's mother in the picture looks a lot like the shop key
Pat: The Witch Shop key
Bret: I did think that
Ash: oh yeah yeah
Sam: excellent point
Pat: I was waiting cuz I honestly I did not remember any of the shop scenes from a cell before it like that was all like some I like I died forgot that this was a part of this movie
I know like always she her mom does she like come back or just like have to leave cuz you didn't want her daughter get caught up in this life or something
Ash: is it the same actress
Holland: I feel like they had a completely different
hair color but I definitely got the vibe that the shopkeeper was very much a mother figure
Bret: you have a lot of inside info the know your mom was a witch too hahaha
Sam: yeah that's right I forgot she said
Pat: I mean but she does she does the Magics so she can see you now
Holland: Siri all-knowing narrator but
Ash: I think it's cuz she touched the ring
my headcanon was that she like touch the ring and from touching the ring she was able to like know all this stuff I guess
Bret: you got to fill out a form and you become or what
Pat: were they moving again at the end
Ash: oh yeah
also I like the explanation of there like why did you move from San Francisco to here and she's like I don't know my Dad just wanted to just like it was okay
Pat: well honestly
Sam: it's such a high school such a high school
Ash: yes go totally totally
Pat: that tracks though at the end cuz we're not giving a reason why they're moving again maybe that's maybe that's legit maybe he's just like I'm done with this place and then
Bret: what is wrong with her dad
Sam: oh my God
Holland: did you guys move a lot when you were younger
Bret: like 3 4
Ash: well to the same town
Holland: I feel like I moved a lot when I was like yeah
I like very much related to that like
Bret: there was a thing with our our specific age groups parents that they were this the concept of trading up houses was a big deal like that was the thing you did to like prove you your social status was like I'm moving to another slightly larger house and like going into debt again like that was just what they did
Sam: also to like the time in Napa you know like it started When We Were Young the town we all grew up in was super cheap and like pretty run down and then it kind of eye San Francisco had the tech boom people started moving farther out of the city to find more affordable housing in which increase the housing prices there so suddenly our parents who bought like these really cheap like intro houses or like s*** our house is worth like a good house amount of money let straight up you know
Ash: God
Bret: yeah all those all those Victorian Mansions around Fuller Park that were like the crap it in like going for like under a hundred are now like multimillion-dollar houses
get out of here now
Ash: remember the shack that went for like a million bucks and Napa not that long ago was ridiculous
Holland: I moved into a decrepit Victorian house and then waitress
Holland: I don't think it's worth any more money in New Jersey
Sam: definitely haunted I feel like every Victorian houses haunted
Holland: for sure but my mate yeah I'm like my parents are super into that stuff my dad's like rice horror novels I'm not even jokes
Ash: that's awesome
that's where you get the love for
Holland: my parents are so liberal
Sam: so if your house wasn't haunted before your dad definitely invited them go season
Sam: excellent
Ash: do you like open the door and he's the one with like the candles and s*** and he's the calling nobody who drafted the candles
Holland: Brett you were saying that her dad or something wrong with him will you elaborate
Ash: she's always happy
Bret: I mean that was a half of more of a joke than anything else but his whole like like you don't want to stay home and watch daytime TV all day I know I could but like he said it was such earnestness that like there's something sinister behind those eyes and like what he does
Holland: maybe he got a bunch of money when her mom died I don't know like he doesn't seem like he does I don't know
yeah but I'm also like
Bret: play move into town and they're like there for a week and move again and like maybe he's like a contract killer I don't know
Holland: are they living in the Hills like the deadly living in Lake Hollywood Hills
Pat: he could be a judge
Holland: I meant to bring that up this next coming right away I know we made such a big deal about the steaks when we're talking about us in the beginning the snakes are like 3 minutes in snake like the snakes start showing up immediately and I thought it was so funny cuz I was like we made jokes about them being Easter eggs but like they really the snakes really do just like start showing up from the beginning
Sam: also
Sam: B2
Ash: and I thought the guy with the snake was going to like come back like I thought he was going to end up to be like Menin or something like the the spirit that they keep calling or whatever and he's going to be like I've been trying to give you the gift of the snake and you won't take it if
Sam: yeah I kind of soap
Pat: take the sneakers Tower like it's not real
Sam: I wouldn't have boyfriend or not really boyfriend when the lovesick high schooler guy showed up on her wall I totally thought it was going to be snake man out there which would have been really cool that would have been like super cool you got hit by a car look like he was dead but then he's back like at her house
what's so funny story I guess funny anecdote about Minaj
it's like a really popular French name for girls it's like the number five most popular name in France
Bret: which like is really funny that they started the film in the French class and spend so much time in the French class and they're basically just like fake witches until the real witch shows up and they just like grabbed everything they could from this French plat class and the sounds foreign like that's it that's the name like yeah we're witches and it's a man in the right cool
Sam: I got maybe
Holland: there was so much French that I was like I mean I took French for a few years and I was like I don't understand what's happening right now I was like Words going to keep talking French
Sam: 60
Bret: parlez-vous francais
Ash: no
Sam: no that was the high schooler obviously but the teacher was like
Holland: Breckin Meyer though is the total dick in this movie so to your point earlier where Breckin Meyer is secretly a dick I've seen very few movies where Breckin Meyer subject
yeah he sucks the best one so
Ash: I wouldn't be talked about like special effects and like I wanted to talk about like one specific special effect that I had a fact about and I didn't want to share it cuz I didn't want to spoil it but like the shot of Nancy being covered in bugs was created by wrapping a lifelike casts of her head and torso and green material the bugs were than filmed crawling all over it and then digitally composited on top of the live-action plate and I can't
Ash: I can't believe how good it looks yeah that's why I wanted to bring it up because
Holland: yeah I thought they just put real bugs on her
Ash: yeah it's it just looks so good and what I read that fax when I was researching the film was like well this isn't going to go well surely for 1996 this is going to look a terrible but no it was great
Bret: they use that in my head itches like of the Beetlejuice effect or like they more stuff in the other stuff but like it worked really well and like I don't know what happened to that because people don't use it anymore and they use like a much worse like all CD version but like
the effects they chose to do or things that they they knew they could get away with
Sam: well that
oh yeah oh yeah it was knocked
Holland: honestly the only thing that bothered me was her hair the Heritage that's the only thing that I was like
Sam: but that whole scene
Ash: I know where a couple times Rose like there's the wig
Sam: the wig was pretty obvious that whole sequence in the house with the snakes in the bugs everywhere holyshit so well done cuz it's
Holland: there's everything to there scorpions there's rats there's maggots
Sam: yeah there's and the maggots coming out of the toilet and like pulsing up but there's something to be said about
Holland: that's legit that's legit
Pat: all I can think about was who cleans all that. I need clean them up I don't want that job that sounds so awful
Sam: they have a they have a regular person don't worry just a practical effects like this
I think of like at the time the mummy you know that had a lot of CG bugs not all the same effect something about having them be real be in that lighting be moving like a real bug
oh and it did way more than what you could do with like twice as much money and CG so so good so good
Holland: this is also such a random thing to bring up but the message that they have at the end of the credits about animal safety seems like different than the generic message if they normal have like it was very much like
something about carrying for like the well-being of the animals used in this film
one of those people that like meticulously read the credits and I just thought it was really funny cuz I feel like they went out of their way to be like no animals were harmed like we had a person we like cared for the well-being of these animals it's fine but like
Sam: that's it's because in Hollywood you're technically allowed to kill bugs on screen
at least at the time
Bret: bugs ain't real I don't know in science rats aren't real
Sam: what do you mean rats aren't real
Holland: I never had to dissect anything so
Pat: it means he needs as far as like they don't are protected by
Bret: yeah like like rats are the only animal you're allowed to kill
Sam: yeah
Bret: like so in Aruba
Ash: I got news for you there's there's rabbits that died too
Bret: are rabbits okay
Sam: okay Brett thanks for f****** taking it to her
Pat: best cartoon or a little cartoon faces and Brett and Stanley thanks for taking it to a dark place like a Tyrell
I know now that we have the t-shirts or just it's bad it's going to be so many this is really weird and dumping something way out of the way my brain works watching it out like I thought was very interesting and I know if I don't know if I like it or not was the way it ends and how she like when she beats
computer with magic like which I thought would have been wishing she had she just kicks her
Bret: she kicked her really far
Sam: sushi
Ash: what is she was using Magic
Bret: that was a magic kick pad
Pat: kicker really good like Bruce Lee would be proud of that kick butt
Bret: you think you could get someone down a hallway
Bret: how much you how much you lift you think you could take someone down a hallway pass
Pat: they were like Defying Gravity in floating
Pat: yeah I do think so
gravity wasn't an issue for her
Ash: finding her
Sam: okay so soap at Insight on that I think what it was was that was she'd already inflicted the power of Madonna and so she was able to kick her far away and then when she kicked her she's finished the incantation of binding her to do no harm to herself or to others so that's how she beat her but it's a little subtle so that's my take on
Ash: oh really the basiji breaking glass was subtle
Pat: no good no she was really quiet
Sam: know that the whispering of the line was subtle
Holland: I love that transition I don't know that weird glass transition I say I'm I totally agree with you were I appreciate all of the like subtleties in this movie we're like I and its like again I seen this movie before but it's been a while but I feel like a lot of things were like we're subtly hint into this and like yeah totally get it you don't need to over explain like I'm there I do really appreciate that about this movie
I love ya
Sam: it didn't talk down to us I think that's what really surprised me yeah is so it's like about teen girls
Holland: yeah
Ash: also that's why they're moving cuz crazy chick was in that house and attacked her and she probably told her dad or dads like let's get out of here
Holland: this movie this is like kind of off topic but I don't know how you guys feel about Jennifer's Body but I I think I haven't seen this movie since I've seen Jennifer's Body
and Jennifer's Jennifer's Body is one of my favorite like horror movies and it's like 2009 so it's more modern horror but still like 10 years ago and like that movie
Pat: is that the Megan Fox is a demon movie
Holland: yeah so it it was a box office flop cuz they tried to sell it as like Megan Fox is hot but like that whole movie is basically about this like female friendship
Megan Fox is like this weird demon that eats boys like there's more to it but like Jennifer's Body is one of my likes favorite horror movies and like it's in part because it's so good but like
Pat: way better than a credit a guy
Holland: because if it did really poorly and I think everyone just kind of wrote it off but it's another one of those cold movies and like you were saying the same thing about the craft works like you know I saw the ratings but it's like it really reminds me of Jennifer's Body and it's written by Diablo Cody would like to know where it's like this like a very realistic portrayal of like this like Teenage friendship and being a teenager and being a female and all this other stuff and I drew like so many parallels between
new movies
Bret: I haven't seen that
Holland: I would recommend Jennifer's Body and also this movie is obviously we just washed it and it's great so watch it but
Bret: added to the list
Holland: Jennifer's Body isn't like witchy stuff it's like it's like demon succubi like gross stuff
Bret: arguably my more favorite version of spooky scary
Holland: and lots of pop punk if you're a punk Aficionado like myself but you probably aren't but
Bret: it sounds like my kind of movie we got to watch this
Ash: he does have blue hair so
Holland: yeah I mean I would hope that with the blue hair
Holland: Chris Pratt
Ash: I see Jennifer I hope so
Holland: early Chris Pratt she is not unfortunately
yeah I mean should we do final thoughts I guess
Mulholland we brought you on specially for the stove I don't think we said that you didn't necessarily choose this film but I knew that you liked this film so tell us how you feel after re-watching again did it hold up to your expectation
Holland: yes well first of all I appreciate you bringing me on I appreciate that this
but I guess something about me reflects that this is kind of should I love
Holland: and I feel like I've talked a lot but yeah I'm in for me personally the issues that this movie addresses addresses so many things that are relatable right so it's like I think this movie addresses a lot of different issues that I had as a teenager into adulthood and so I really appreciate it so it's like you know racism is a thing like
you know having being half black having curly hair like that's like this weird thing this morning like the background but like I forgot that they address this in this movie that it's like oh yeah white chicks are racist cool we addressed that awesome and like they talk about like Robin Tunney talks about like attempting suicide in like cutting herself and I was like oh oh that's like also like a really heavy thing dark but relatable shirt and then Neve Campbell and like all of her like scarring from
whatever injury that they they don't go into depth about but she's like so upset about like her scarring in her skin and that kind of stuff and I was like wow I really like that too and it's like
I think there's just like all their little issues that they're going through
end up being relatable in the long run because whether they like appearance-based or you no free space but it's also kind of appeared spaced or like money based or just like issues with your parents or your friends or family like they bring up so many different things that I think are relatable to so many people in general and also specifically like when your teenager and it just sets the stuff up so well and it is like ash how you asked him how he brought up where it's like you can relate to the Village right cuz he's not the one it's like you're coming into the situation she's new like trying to be friends with everyone and then
I don't know I just like everything that happened to this movie is kind of like oh yeah like even if I didn't experience this directly I can relate to feeling this and I think this movie does a really good job of just like
being a teenager but then also like here we'll just exaggerate everything so it's also like spooky and like horror and it's
it's a really great movie and it has been a while since I washed it and I'm glad that it is still as good as Irish
Sam: to kind of add to yours real quick you mentioned all their individual struggles and it just kind of reminded me how well they wrote those characters because their struggles were not their identity which is really subtle and really like Well Done where it's not always the case in these sort of like I want to come throw away movies but these like cheap teen movies but they did a really good job of rounding out their characters and making them whole but making them people that had to deal with these issues not people that were defined by these
Bret: boy that's a real good Insight on Modern filmmaker
Holland: yeah well and I think the only character that maybe is pushing it is like with enough Campbell stuff I feel like in the beginning she so overtly like I'm so awkward and I'm so uncomfortable and it's just like they probably didn't need to go like as Extreme as they did with her but like
you know you get the point across like I think a lot of is just going to like these are things that everyone can relate to
some extreme or another
Ash: what's her character like I didn't know I didn't have like I don't have burn scars or anything but as someone who was overweight and high school I would hide my body and big baggy clothes that covered all of me and I really like related to that that she was doing that you know trying to hide her figure and you know it was a very like I just really relate to that for sure in a someone who like I've finally lost weight and I'm like finally more comfortable like wearing clothes that have like I never would have thought that I would wear a mini-skirt you know and I'm just like look at me
Pat: oh you you still are you just used to be nice to
Bret: You Used To Be Nice Ash
Ash: I know and now I'm a dick
Sam: tell him pregnant ladies with they failed at their life like there you go man
Ash: I know I'm a dick I'm sorry
Sam: never work it out with you again like on that too like so she's like her scars are pretty significant but like I don't know if it was just a lady problem but do you remember the day of like your first pimple
play the first breakout that I got was
f****** traumatic
Holland: I mean you see my face right now acne has been the bane of my existence so
Ash: I've had this conversation with U-Haul and I think we talked about acne
Holland: oh yeah ask me and like picking at Olivet it's like way better now as an adult but it's like I'm almost 20 years old and I'm still dealing with it so it's just like
Sam: yes I mean
Holland: I love it love it
Sam: but like as a high-schooler though like it feels like it's like everything everyone is looking at that like everyone sees your one flaw because you see it so they did a really good job of kind of taking that to a bit of an extreme in a totally weird and Justified way but like pointing that out and making that something that you could relate to
Ash: yeah totally I actually had it cousin she's older than me but he did get burned in a fire and like the majority of his body is scarred from it including his face and I remember you know I was a very young little kid and I remember it being very scary for me because it does look visually scary for a child and I can't even imagine what it must have been like for him and you know it just goes to show that like you know those people
that's just such a horrible thing to have to deal with like I can't even imagine
back in the day yeah
Holland: yeah Mike this is a pretty lame thing to bring out that I was re-watching americasnexttopmodel and I think it's like around like season 10 maybe somewhere in the middle there is a contested who comes on who has like severe burns on a lot of her body and it's like as trivial as that show is cuz it's a reality show is like this really big thing or it's like he comes on the show even though she has her body and that's like a thing that they kind of like discuss that they probably could have handled better but I think it's super interesting you know it's you know it's mm reality of but yeah
what it is like interesting cuz it's like yeah
that is a thing that people deal
Bret: like we need to start referring to the early aughts as just a time that would pre empathy
Holland: I tried they tried they just
Ash: yeah we'll see what are your final thoughts
you kind of just said them but
Sam: did I said I added too I don't know if they'll be like my wrap up
my wrap-up would be
Sam: I had keeps I hate keeping saying this but like I'm shocked at how I like this movie it's like a sleeper man really well sis synced like expertly crafted story it's nothing like fancy and crazy but it's just really well developed and thought-out characters with a very like relatable plot and they really
found dead on how to use their strengths to tell this story so
from the very beginning to the end
they just knew what story they were trying to tell they knew how to tell it and they didn't talk down to their audience and they told it in a really interesting strangely believable way for a movie about witchcraft you know and it was a lot of really subtle filmmaking decisions that made that the case you know like the all practical effects you know making them girls who dressed normal and there was no like magic lightning that came out of their fingers like things just kind of happened and the magic happened in a really real way so it does leave you as an audience member
kind of guessing like well did that just like happen naturally or like is it actually magic which is kind of the beauty of the story
magical and not believable in a realistic way and I left it it was fantastic that's where I'm going to leave it
Ash: did you hate it
Bret: so this is my first viewing of this film and I feel like
Matthew years we watching trying to find like a good Halloween movie that isn't just hocus-pocus and
Holland: Hocus Pocus so good though
Ash: it is good but I here yet
Bret: you guys started watching like a Halloween Town the other day and
Sam: for the six-year-old in the room
I put it on for the Sixers
Bret: I like this no we're turning this
Pat: Watch Over the Garden Wall again
it's very Halloween
Ash: yeah we are all about the gore
Bret: or like when I was a kid I remember one year I invited people over for Halloween to have a Halloween party and we were going to watch a scary movie because I spelled scary wrong in my actual physical invitations that I handed out to people cuz I was adorable kid and it wasn't it wasn't even like a horror movie it was just like a weird anyway there's so many movies that are either just like me and Ash watching stuff in high school but like this movie is so good that it's I think it is the best Halloween movie
Holland: yeah wow
Pat: I thought your story but no one came to your party
Bret: hahaha people showed up everyone was disappointed with the movie choice
Sam: what's your movie choice
Bret: I don't even remember I just remember like all this isn't this isn't scary at all anyway
Holland: you've blocked it out of your memory
Bret: this movie is because it has all of the Halloween stuff but also none of the Halloween witch I think it's awesome because it's spooky stuff can happen any time of year and
the storytelling was fantastic
Pat: play the entire year is just spooky stuff
Ash: yeah that's true
Bret: the story was fantastic all of the characters are relatable like family saying and I feel like just most importantly it took itself serious in a way that actually came off
like earnestly and believable like as far as what the actual story was trying to be it wasn't trying to be as go fast kids movie it wasn't trying to be a murder gorefest and a lot of movies that are just like witchcraft is real or like f****** lame because like that's just the vibe O A lot of times I back it this avoids all of those tropes and was just a really really cool movie I liked it go watch it listeners if you haven't seen the craft it more than most of the movies we watched on this podcast I'd say it's worth a lot
Pat: cat has a dissenting opinion
Bret: my cat such a jerk
Holland: I feel bad I was like I hope you hear the viewing the aggressive mewing in the background
Ash: also you should watch John Carpenter's The Thing so far it's the best Halloween movie I've watched this one
Holland: nothing is good and so is the X-Files episode ice that's like the fourth episode of season one that's based on the thing
Pat: Netflix Netflix and Adam Sandler have is all covered with our new favorite Hollywood movie Huey Halo
Ash: no no no
Holland: I wasn't Hubie I thought it was hubby I haven't watched it yet
Pat: okay so I have not watched it but I listen to daily Zeitgeist and they were talking about it and miles and just said that
is actually
it was way better than expected and if you like the if you are a fan of like the old Neil Billy Madison Happy Gilmore is like knots that stuff
I know it looks like hot garbage but it's
Ash: it really does
Holland: is on my list I'm I'm planning on watching it just I want to give it some space like
Pat: like you like it's not good but it's an entertaining text
Holland: I'm one of those people
Bret: it looked like it might be good though
Holland: really
Ash: Adam Sandler doing a mentally handicapped person voice cuz he thinks it's funny is so problematic out the gate
Pat: yeah is he what is he doing that voice still like The Waterboy voice
Ash: yeah
Holland: oh no that's unfortunate I didn't realize that I
Ash: I see the trailer is like what are you doing Adam Sandler at this isn't okay anymore unless he really is mentally handicapped in the movie I don't know
Bret: even then sorry
Ash: I'm sorry I know it's alright
Holland: I don't know what my biggest thing is like anything that everyone is talking about I try and just give it space like I want to just watch it without everyone's opinions on it was really hard to do these days no no no no no but at the same time like I said seems problem
Ash: yeah yeah
I'm like nothing
Bret: like it's at to the point now though we're like that voice is so much of what Adam Sandler is a human being that like
Ash: I know
Bret: it's it's almost like is it is it that voice or is it just like his weird like whining like an awful Cartman voice you know like I don't know if he's trying to be that or if that's just a stupid ass voice he does now
Ash: maybe but it's felt very
it doesn't sound like the same voices that I've heard him doing the past but it was very much like those characters mentally handicapped and you're doing a funny voice
because you think you need to
Bret: well I'll watch it and I let you
I think that's like
Ash: or you think it's funny please let me know his Netflix keeps peeing like anytime I watch something it's like want to watch this next and let God know anyway
Pat: do they have a don't ever show this to me again they need that
Ash: I wish
Bret: Netflix discovered the Adam Sandler infinite money machine in which he pumps out garbage and everyone watches it and somehow it makes money and like they're just going to f****** crank those suckers out and that's that's how they're funding the rest of the shows now
Ash: yep
Bret: Adam Sandler is the dead horse
Holland: I don't understand that flexes model because they're technically in debt and they cancel everything after two seasons but they always have new stuff coming out I don't know I have friends that like work for Netflix so I feel like I shouldn't be sure date on Netflix but I just physically don't understand what's happened
Pat: they made 20 billion dollars
Holland: weather in Death like they're still billions of dollars in debt
Pat: they probably made 20 billion this year too
Sam: their goal is to just release good enough
Holland: that makes sense because every so often their stuff is good but most of the original content is low
Sam: yeah yeah
Pat: we have so much of it
Holland: I don't like stranger things I'm not a fan
what everyone else says I know you
Ash: we just need a couple of good stranger things and they're like great got that everybody's going to hook in will even if you're not like it's you know it's a success yeah everyone's loves it and
Bret: if you throw a ball in every direction you're going to hit something eventually
Holland: driving but I think it's hard because I have friends who work for Netflix and they you know there's like preaching the gospel to take it so seriously at me like the band treat they treat their employees so well and like we do that and they're just like drinking the Kool-Aid in the mic and for a while I was like maybe it's just work for Netflix like Netflix seems like the place to be but it's also like
Bret: Netflix corporate seems like the place to be
Sam: no cat
Pat: God is good
Pat: honestly I did I was surprised that I almost had honestly like I was really surprised at how tight it was negatively and I made jokes about like how much is left on The Cutting Room floor but it's probably for the best cuz there was no that was really Stiller in this it was very light
everything was everything like all all scenes were in service of the narrative right in this is definitely the type of movie I feel like that could have had a ton of life
nonsense scenes that don't do anything they're just it's someone from this would be cool just seeing some other magic thing or some more interactions with the high school kids make sure they to each other but really everything felt very much
I get it serviced purposed words in there that I really love saying it wasn't much that was just throw away which I really liked and appreciate that part of it so it was what yeah it was more like it was much more in the
Ash: I just Googled it Pat and there are multiple deleted scenes from this movie so you are correct in your assessment
Holland: I don't even know if I want to watch them like I
Ash: I know ice I feel like it's fine as is personally but
Holland: a lot of times you like the cut stuff out that would have been helpful but in this case like
I feel like the point select the point gets across
Pat: there's no mystery right there's no like why did they like I don't gamble but like honestly it's fine like it got across
Holland: I felt bad I felt bad
Ash: except for snake Guy what's the deal with snake guy
Holland: okay one of my favorite movie Trucks that's done slightly differently in this movie is when you're watching someone in middle of the road and you're like this person's going to get hit by a car out of nowhere and they do again it's cut slightly differently in this movie but it's like Meet Joe Black Final Destination like Mean Girls there's multiple movies where it's like someone stuck in the middle of Road and they call the boom bus and they just like get hit and died but it's such I love that true
it's like ridiculous
Ash: yeah those brutal
Pat: I'd like to Big varieties of that there's a whatever the truck or bus to hit some just like Suites across the frame and then that's the last you see of it or they show you like what this when they show him get run the body get run over
yeah
Holland: that's what I was saying I was like this one was way more realistic rice like people are running up to him like they're trying to make sure he's okay
Sam: and it was a traumatic shot that camera was under the car and show the tire go over him
Pat: yeah yeah yeah that was up under there
Holland: free GoPro so it's like oh Jesus
Pat: but Ashley will be don't know what to do it decently like you know how to do was I mean I'm looking swimming he's just like also like a tuned with that world at some point like he was born with it
Holland: is like an amalgamation of magic
Ash: so interesting
Holland: also Bean
Pat: and he just like see that in her too or he's he's like he's like 10 maybe it drove him nuts or he just doesn't know how to cope with it cuz he was on his own maybe didn't have like three other people to help him figure out what it was and he
Ash: yeah
Holland: I think living in La like now that I've been in La for like like 5 years I think it's a very different experience watching this movie because I recognized so many different things about LA and it's like there's a huge you know homeless population in LA and you have all these weird interactions of people who live on the street and you're so alike turn a blind eye but I think it works really well on this movie just like yeah I mean there's so many random people that are just like on the street or like luckily I never had the experience or people like come up to you at your house at like I know that happens and I think that as a whole another layer this movie where it's like oh yeah that's that's the thing like there's transients if that's going to happen so
Ash: the only problem I had with that is that they just should have had the city she should have been moving from should not have been San Francisco because San Francisco has them too and honestly their way weirder than the LA ones they are the homeless people in San Francisco are so much more weirder
Sam: at this time so at this time 1996
it was a little bit pre-tech boom in San Francisco so they're there homeless population probably was a little more concentrated to like the financial district and places where they could Panhandle more so if they were rich and like lived up in the suburbs they might not she might not have had that experience or
Holland: yeah that's fair cuz this is like post LA riots were like 93 is it was like for like 3-4 years post
bad version of La that people were like actively trying to get out of so
Nova School Washington
Ash: I'm just imagining like
anytime it was ever on Muni in San Francisco there was always some sort of weird called was person on the bus that was like saying some weird s*** every time
Sam: oh yeah and as a lady they always f****** come and talk to you and you're like no
Holland: I've had both sides of it like ivory
Sam: oh God
it's almost been
Holland: someone is attempted to mug me and then I've also had a guy that came up to me on the bus that was like are you an actress like do you want to be famous like are you looking to get into movies and I'm like please go away no that's like I don't want to be discovered I'm just trying to get to work leave me alone
Sam: you've almost been bugged that's crazy
Holland: yeah someone tried to steal my phone but
Holland: I realized how weirdly aggressive is
Sam: I'm glad that worked out
Holland: so it was fine they didn't steal my phone no one helps me though which was annoying cuz I yelled like I was like okay I have to make a lot of noise I feel yell and scream and like no one did s*** but it was at a stop so they eventually were like okay I have to get off and I give up
Sam: weird
Bret: that's scary
Sam: on the Metro
Ash: oh wow I was like on the bus that's crazy
Sam: hear that that's not where would have thought
Holland: it was on the the Metro it was the Metro from Silver City cuz I saw it was actually it was it goes to Santa Monica now but it used to go from Culver and Metro but I used to commute into Burbank I know it was then it was like the nice or lying yeah
Sam: my favorite just random Hollywood Italian
Sam: it's totally not related but it's just funny and I think Colin will appreciate it so I used to work at Stoopid buddy which is in Burbank and it's right next to the Central Casting so there's a bus stop there and so my favorite Hollywood moment is I'm like Russian between buildings because we had like three buildings you know spaced-out across that street and this bus pulls up girl gets out and she's like how do you make it in Hollywood
Holland: no but that that guy who came up to me should I came up to her because like literally like I live right by downtown Burbank I'm like Glenoaks and Magnolia I'm working at starburns right now but we're moving to a place in Sun Valley but it's like yeah it's like that's that's right where I am
Sam: Red Starburst
Holland: I'm at the castle but I'm going to fix fix starting Monday I don't know
okay
Sam: anyway that was my
Pat: let's Network the podcast without podcast
Ash: Fresno to cut out so much so
Holland: sorry cut up chunks
Sam: I don't think you actually said your final thoughts I'm sorry
Ash: I didn't know
Bret: more like an hour over
Ash: I just waited for you to run out of stuff we're having so much fun and it's Hollow
Holland: blame it on me
Ash: so as an ex Gossip Girl in high school who
Holland: X goth girl
discontinue just keep going
Ash: X goth girl yeah the totally like I was the scene where they were like we are the freaks I was like that yes that attitude was me and high schools for sure and my friends and I like to tarot card readings and had to ruin stones and it was totally into like magic and all the stuff and so like this movie Spells a Lot Like a piece of my high school experience and I really really related to it and like Sam said I was so shocked at not only like how well you know the story was written and the plot was form the heavy subjects that they touched on how they really showed what it's like to be a teenage girl and I'm also impressed with the effects that like all of it I was I had a very low bar
Holland: thank you for having me
Bret: right on well I guess that's the craft thanks for coming on the show Holland you want tell everybody again where maybe they can find you on the internet or
Holland: man I feel like I don't really have anything to plug my Twitter is just my name it's at Holland Farkas Island like the province of the northern half of Netherlands Farkas like the most common Hungarian last name and told and yeah I don't even really tweet that much anymore but every so often I live-tweet Masked Singer because
Holland: that's my that's what I do. Just but yeah
Ash: oh yeah yeah
I guess short film festival yeah
Holland: I have nothing to plug I actually just filling because his coming out around Halloween I did some stuff with Omar if you know I'm running a job he does 13 days 13 shorts which is fun Halloween themed it's just everything is like videos photos it's whatever our yeah it's like a weird mini online Festival all things Halloween so I found some stuff with Omar and Chris weekend podcast with them we should do a butt buffini podcast together which state continues to talk about Buffy and Angel and I just left cuz I got too busy but yeah so I would just because and
Ash: yeah yeah we have to have Omar back we had him on I can't remember the movie but we have to have him back cuz we're going to watch blank check with him and we keep saying we have to do it
Holland: yes I've talked to him about the movie I've never seen that movie I've just heard people talk about them to me and I'm just like this is bizarre this is the most bizarre movie
Pat: I'm very excited because that is another installment it's been a very long time since we brought this up blank check the movie is another installment in the tone Loke library of films
Ash: so is it really
oh wow wow
Bret: will get through them all eventually
Pat: she played the character named juice
Ash: of course he does
Holland: what is it the worst part of the movie is like a 12 year old 13 year old boy like kissing an adult woman
Bret: hopefully that's the worst part of the movie
Ash: I'm just really I don't remember much about it so
Pat: remember everything about
Ash: anyway Omar Tovar will have you back I promise we'll do it
Bret: alright Ashe get units
Ash: do we think Colin first
Bret: I literally just thanked her and then it was like tell people to fight
Ash: write well thank you Holland for being on
thank you again
Sam: it means more cuz it's coming from Ash
Bret: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Ash: thank you x 3 or whatever they say
Holland: oh yeah it comes comes back Comes Back Time Spa
Ash: you can also follow us on Twitter or at a let's re-watch where we do fun stuff like I tweet twitter pools where you can choose the movie or if you can choose the movie I'll treat tweet a screenshot which this one was a little tough it was hard for people to get but Ralph came in and got it in the end and guess the craft good job rough I did have to give him a hint though
I guess I chose too hard of a screenshot
Holland: screenshot
Bret: maybe everybody was like me and just totally miss this movie that the first time around
Sam: hard to believe
Holland: sofa
Sam: so if you liked our podcast please give us a 5-star review on iTunes
Bret: apple pie
Sam: f****** f*** please give us a 5-star review on Apple podcasts or Google podcast
Pat: we are part of the certain pov.com network of shows so going over to certain people b.com and check out other awesome shows with hosted by awesome people like judging book covers circle of friendship Dole Whip and dreams the Rob Thomas no not that one broadcast again cuz we stepped all over it last time
Holland: that's such a good name
Pat: the real movie Creek Bridge of the synagogue ice cream snark another pass and fun and games with Matt and jet and a couple others it's a bunch of really awesome delightful sweet talented people are very happy to be part of the network check it out
Bret: and join us next time when we watch an action Thanksgiving special excessive force to force on Force
Pat: shut up that is not a real movie title is it
Pat: totally understandable I have an emergency breed on every floor just in case
